The Hunger Games

By Kayla Valuriya

The story is about the future world of the USA. It is divided into twelve districts. Each district must pick one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve to eighteen to fight to the death. People from different districts watch The Hunger Games.

Katniss- She is loyal to her sister. She loves her little sister very much. Her sister’s name is Prim. She is only eleven years old. Katniss is sixteen years old. She does not want Prim to join The Hunger Games because it is a very dangerous place where they have to survive. They are from District 12. District 12 is a very poor place.
Rue –She is from District 11. She is a small girl, with dark skin and dark eyes. She is younger than Katniss. Rue want make sure Katniss stays alive. Rue put to the medicine on her skin and told her to stay away from the beehive. Next she allies with Katniss. They are good friends. Later Rue died because someone from district 1 killed her.
Peeta Mellark – He is a sixteen years old baker boy. He has blond hair and is strong guy. He knew Katniss since they were five years old, Katniss kissed Peeta because she wanted to keep him alive.
Gale- He supported Katniss. He gave her food. She was hungry. Gale was jealous because he saw Katniss kiss Peeta pn the video. Gale fell in love with her. Gale supports her family.

Setting – District 12 was the poorest place. District 12 has not won The Hunger Games many years till now; finally District 12 won The Hunger Games.

What the parents to know?
The Hunger Games was so adventurous, but there was a lot of violence. There’s a clear difference between reading about the violence and seeing it in the movie. The ten to twelve-year-olds who have to read the book may find the movie scary, sometimes a lot of bloody teen-on-teen violence.

I like the book better than the movie. Why? There is more information and good story in the book. The movie has less information and does not tell enough of the story.

Big Miracle

by Ja-Niece Griffith

I watched a movie called Big Miracle on the computer. It is rated PG. It’s a good view when you know about animals. I like to watch wildlife rescue. It has drama, action, adventure, romance, and is inspired by a true story.

A TV producer told the local news that whales were trapped in one hole under the ice. Everyone watched it on TV. They had big hope for the whales when a boat (hover barge) tried to break through the ice. People came from different countries to help dig and break an ice hole to open the sea. At the end of the movie, the whales were freed. In 1988 this happened in real life in Barrow, Alaska. The movie was easy to understand. I understood how the whales were feeling trapped in the ice. Wow! People had soft hearts and the world came to help them. The main actors/actresses are Kristen Bell, Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Tim Blake Nelson and Mark Ivanir. All of them gave good performances. Director was Ken Kwapis.

The 5th Quarter

By Ja-Niece Griffith

I watched a movie called The 5th Quarter. It’s so GORGEOUS! I rented a DVD, and I watched on my DVD player. It’s rated PG-13. I would recommend that you watch this movie. It caused me anguish because I wondered how their family could cope through the loss of their loved one in an accident. It’s inspired by a true story. It’s a drama and biography. I really enjoyed watching this movie even though some parts were not clear to me, but after a while I understood all of the movie. It’s really WOW! When it was over, there was a short clip about the biography of the Abbate family who had experienced their loved one’s loss from the family.

Jon Abbate’s brother died in an accident from a reckless teenage driver. Luke Abbate was 15 years old when he died. Jon Abbate honored his brother Luke using his quarterback number #5 on his uniform which was Luke’s number in high school. So Jon honored him at the ACC Championship. Jon found ways to honor his brother Luke in football. Director was Rick Bieber.
